Caracterização molecular e divergência genética de Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) em diferentes culturas e locais de cultivo Neotropical Entomology
Fontes,Fernanda Von H M; Colombo,Carlos A; Lourenção,André L.
Knowledge on the genetic variation of populations of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) can improve the understanding of genetic diversity found in their biotypes and, consequently, offer guidelines for its management. In this study, the molecular characterization was performed and genetic diversity data were obtained for this insect from three regions of Brazil on different crops [cotton and soybean (Mato Grosso - MT); cabbage (Distrito Federal - DF); soybean and potato (São Paulo - SP)], using RAPD markers. RAPD analysis indicated 80.6% polymorphic loci and the average genetic similarity obtained by the Jaccard coefficient was 0.67. The whitefly populations collected on potato (SP) and soybean (MT) had higher genetic diversity values (0.75 and 0.72, respectively)....

Gaetti-Jardim Jr.,Elerson; Wahasugui,Thais Cristiane; Tomazinho,Paulo Henrique; Marques,Márcia Martins; Nakano,Viviane; Avila-Campos,Mario Julio.
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is an important etiologic agent of the periodontitis and is associated with extra-oral infections. In this study, the detection of the ltxA gene as well as the ltx promoter region from leukotoxic A. actinomycetemcomitans isolated from 50 Brazilian patients with periodontitis and 50 healthy subjects was performed. The leukotoxic activity on HL-60 cells was also evaluated. Leukotoxic activity was determined using a trypan blue exclusion method. The 530 bp deletion in the promoter region was evaluated by PCR using a PRO primer pair. A. actinomycetemcomitans was detected by culture and directly from crude subgingival biofilm by PCR using specific primers. By culture, A. actinomycetemcomitans was detected in nine (18%) of...

Genetic variability among Commelina weed species from the states of Paraná and São Paulo, Brazil Planta Daninha
Rocha,D.C.; Rodella,R.A.; Marino,C.L.; Martins,D..
This work aims to carry out a comparative analysis using RAPD molecular markers in four Commelina weed species from the state of Paraná and C. benghalensis populations from the states of Paraná and São Paulo, Brazil. The genomic plant DNA sample was extracted from the leaves, separated, randomly fragmented and amplified by PCR. Random amplified polymorphic DNA fragments (RAPD markers) were analyzed by using POPGENE statistical program. Eighty-five primer sequences were tested but only three were suitable as molecular markers producing 37 DNA polymorphic fragments for comparisons among four Commelina species and 22 polymorphic fragments for comparisons among C. benghalensis populations. The results showed that there were inter-specific and intra-specific...

Growth Analysis of Chloris elata Planta Daninha
CORREIA,N.M.; RESENDE,I..
ABSTRACT: In Brazil, in agricultural areas where there is no establishment of cover crops in the off season, as well as in citrus orchards in the state of São Paulo, an increase in the infestation of Chloris elata has been observed. This is a perennial species, propagated by seeds and short rhizomes, erect and slightly caespitose. With the objective of evaluating the growth and development of plants from two accessions of C. elata, a greenhouse experiment was conducted. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 (accessions of C. elata) x 15 (evaluation periods) factorial arrangement, with four replications. Fifteen destructive evaluations were performed 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98, 112 and 126 days after sowing (DAS)...

Hessian Fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), Populations in the North of Tunisia: Virulence, Yield Loss Assessment and Phenological Data Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Makni,Hanem; Bouktila,Dhia; Mezghani,Maha; Makni,Mohamed.
Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), is a destructive pest of wheat worldwide and an endemic pest in Tunisia. Two natural populations of this insect from the North of Tunisia were evaluated, in the field, for their virulence, based on response developed by bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars carrying H3, H5, H6, H7H8, H11, H13 and H16 resistance genes. H11, H13 and H16 showed a high effectiveness against both populations; therefore, their implication in Hessian fly breeding programs would be of interest. The level of infestation, as well as the yield loss, was assessed, based on the percentage of infested plants and variation in growth parameters due to infestation. The percentage of infested plants, over a 2-yr period in Mateur, averaged...

Mosquera, Juan Carlos Velasquez; Álvarez, Juan David Corrales; Jacometo, Carolina Bespalhok.
The application of morphofunctional measurements allows the selection of suitable animals to perform working activities and ensure that animal maximum capacities are not exceeded. Mules are commonly used by small farmers for agricultural work in mountain areas where the access is extremely difficult. We aimed to estimate the functionality indexes of working mules in mountain areas of the Colombian Central Andes. A total of 94 adult mules were evaluated for withers height, thoracic perimeter, body length, neck length, and body weight, which were used to determine the body index (BI), proportionality index (PI), and load carriage index (LCI). Descriptive statistics, analysis of correlations, and principal component analysis were performed. Males presented...

Response of Three Chloris elata Populations to Herbicides Sprayed in Pre- and Post-Emergence Planta Daninha
CORREIA,N.M.; RESENDE,Í..
ABSTRACT: In agricultural areas of Brazil, where there is no establishment of cover crops in the off-season and in fruit orchards, an increase in Chloris elata infestations, syn. Chloris polydactyla, has been observed. With the purpose to evaluate the response of three populations (Itaberaí - GO, Matão - SP e Jaboticabal - SP) of C. elata to herbicides sprayed before and after emergence, four experiments were conducted. In the first one, the differential tolerance of three C. elata populations to the herbicide glyphosate (0, 0.18, 0.36, 0.72, 0.96, 1.44, 2.88, 5.76 and 11.52 kg a.e. ha-1) was studied. In the other experiments, the control of the three populations by herbicides applied in pre-emergence (clomazone, diclosulam, flumioxazin, isoxaflutole,...

Ribotyping, biotyping and capsular typing of Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated from patients in Campinas, southeast Brazil BJID
Lancellotti,Marcelo; Pace,Fernanda de; Stehling,Eliana Guedes; Villares,Maria Cecília Barisson; Brocchi,Marcelo; Silveira,Wanderley Dias da.
Forty-five Haemophilus influenzae strains isolated from patients were characterized based on biochemical characteristics. Their capsular types were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR); they were compared, using two molecular methods [ribotyping with a specific DNA probe amplified from the 16S rDNA region from H. influenzae and through restriction fragment length polymorphism (RLFP) of an amplified 16S DNA region]. The strains were better discriminated by the ribotyping technique that used the 16S probe and by the combination of both techniques. Biotypes I and IV were the most common, followed by biotypes VI, VIII and III. Biotypes II and VII were not found. Most of the capsular samples were nontypable (89%), with capsular types a and b found in 2...

Development of rice varieties conferring broad-spectrum and durable resistance against brown planthopper (BPH) is one of the major challenges facing the plant breeders. Idea has been generated in this study for incorporating resistance genes of ovicidal response and feeding inhibition into rice breeding lines. Our initial experiments focused on discovering the ovicidal trait in indica rice cultivars. We found that some weedy rice lines had the ovicidal resistance, causing 60% to 100% egg mortality. The egg mortality rate depends on the rice developmental stages and is the highest at the maximum tillering stage. This is the first report of the ovicidal trait in indica rice lines. The BPH resistance in weedy rice lines is not only mediated by the ovicidal...

Evaluation of the ability of rice varieties in resistance to brown plant hopper was performed using seed box screen test. The brown plant hopers (BPH) were collected from rice paddy fields in Phitsanulok, Chainat, and Ang Thong Province. From cluster analysis at level 0.8, there were three different groups classified by the different level of rice plant damage after treated by the insects. The three different level of damage were graded by the ability in resistance to the BPH as resistance, moderately resistance and susceptible. Considering in biotype of the BPH, the results indicated that there were variety of BPH biotypes in each samples collected from the three different provinces. Mainly, the biotype 4 and 5 were indentified in these samples. However,...
